Here is How to use a French Press listed in 10 Easy Steps
1.) Use high quality filtered water – refrigerator filters or pitchers with filters work great!
2.) Heat water to between 195-205 F. Water boils at 212 F, use a thermometer – don’t use boiling water!
– 1 level tablespoon coffee weighs ~ 0.15 ounces (light roast is heavier than dark)
– 1 ounce = 28.35 grams if your metric! LOL
4.) Freshly grind coffee between Med and Coarse – adjust for taste
5.) Remove “plunger” part of press – the stem/screen.
6.) Add coffee grounds
7.) Stir 30 seconds while adding proper temp water – long handle or wooden spoon best
8.) Insert plunger screen side down, plunger up, let sit 3 – 5 min.
Note – Grind only the amount of coffee you plan to consume immediately. Coffee will lose oi freshness 20-30 min after grind.
Press coffee should be ground between medium and coarse.
The finer you grind, the more flavor you will extract. Finer grounds require more force when pressing the plunger and result in more “silt” or “mud” at the bottom of the pot and your cup.
Too fine will result in over-extraction, which will be unpleasant. Finer grind requires less brewing time.
Have LOTS of fun experimenting with grind and time to find your desired taste.
Pushing too hard with plunger down will result in grounds and silt “seeping” through the screen. If you don’t
Do NOT throw coffee grounds away – there are ALL kinds of uses around the home for them. See our article about this in our blogs!
Here are some pro tips
Pro-tip #1 – Want to press coffee at the office? Commercial coffee makers typically have a “hot water” spigot for making tea. That water is pretty darn hot! Bring a travel press or keep one at work with a grinder or bring grounds ready to go (I know I said ground coffee loses freshness quickly, it will still be better than grocery store coffee!)
Make great tasting coffee at work, be the envy of the break room. People will smell your coffee and think, “What is THAT?” and “Where do I get some?” Make a “side-hustle” – $$$ – at work selling cups of your secret delish coffee, or just let the “cat out of the bag” and tell them to go to www.Roast2Order.Com.
Better yet, tell everyone to go to www.Roast2Order.Com!!!
Pro-tip #2 – add a hot filtered water tap at your sink – DIY or hire a handyman – with a small electric hot water tank. Set proper temperature – hot water ready to press coffee anytime you want!
Thank you, Charlene S., for sharing your photo and review!
Purchased coffee beans and the coffee press from R2O at Christmas. A gift to myself. I was too intimidated to use it, so when my son was here for a visit this week he walked me through it. Not hard at all. Actually it was quite easy to use. Call me a convert!
Hi Melody, not sure why, I am just seeing your comment now! Sorry for delayed response. Thank you so much for sharing your most excellent story! Please thank your son from us – so nice of him helping you. Your right, it is not hard to press coffee and it is so darn good, hooray for another convert! Nothing beats “pressing the —- out of it!” as the Stever coined back when we first started to sponsor his show! Having multiple presses around makes “coffee clutches” even better…offer your guests a variety of different beans and/or make it however strong someone likes! Just a thought! Thank you! Mike
Mike, got your coffee today…looking forward to it tomorrow. According to the Dahlcast you are in the Algonquin area. I’m a
FF in the area. I can do pick ups too. looking forward to the experience,
John, thanks for your email, your order, and most importantly, your service to us! Would love to meet you!!! So glad to know our FF are being properly caffeinated! Look forward to your feedback, maybe one day we can get your fellow FF hooked too!
